What is sanctuary care?
The Sanctuary Model is a treatment and organizational framework for creating trauma-informed communities. The Standards were developed by the Sanctuary Institute in collaboration with Dr. Sandra Bloom as a way of measuring adherence and fidelity to the practices and philosophy of the Sanctuary Model in human service organizations. The Standards serve as a tool to determine if an organization or program meets the qualifications for Sanctuary certification.
The four pillars of the Sanctuary Model are Trauma Theory, SELF framework, Seven Commitments and Sanctuary Tools. All levels of an organization must utilize and demonstrate the concepts of the Sanctuary Model in order to be certified. By understanding what trauma is, what trauma symptoms are, how the effects of trauma are seen in daily life, staff are better able to identify and respond to children with trauma histories.
